I have a oscellaris clown fish in a 48 gallon tank with 3 BTS b/c they keep splitting! I want to introduce a juvenile to end up as a friend / mate to my existing clown fish. I tried this once before and it did not go well! I am ASSuming that both fish were already female. Suggestions on a successful pairing? Here is what I am planning:
1. I am getting a tiny jevenile tank raised clown fish (should I get the absolute smallest?)
2. I will have him acclimatize in a glass display tank so he can see other fish before being introduced
3. I will move rock work around as the new fish enters....
4. Lights off for 24 hours

Other suggestions??

It is a hit or miss thing. Definitely get a smaller clown than your existing resident. The acclimation box is a good idea.

If you are looking to pair your current clown with another one, you need to purchase a clown that is considerably a lot smaller. If you purchase a clown the same size, there is a good chance both will be females and fight to the death.

A mirror if aggression gets to bad.

Update!! Added new Ocellaris clown to my DT. The two fish are just fine. I *think* this is working. IMO the trick is that I did NOT QT this fish. The last time the QT time gave the male time to turn into a female. This time I worked with my LFS to order a tank raised ocellaris clown. They assured me the facility where they are bred is ich free BUT once they put the fish in their water they can not be sure no ich exists. SOOOOooo I picked up the fish in the water from the breeder where they only raise tank raised clown fish - no disease. If you get a fish from the ocean you always have the issue of brook / ich etc.

The existing O. clown fish is 2+ inches. The new Male is under 1 inch. MUCH Smaller. Now I have to see how long it takes the tank raised O clown fish to find my bubble tip anemones! My existing never leaves the BTA's anymore.
