So I recently acquired a 3” male scribbled angelfish and is currently in QT. Very active and devours anything. I’m actually considering adding a female scribbled but haven’t seen anything smaller than him. Usually they start at a good 4”. So was thinking of having the male grow at the dt to around 5” then buying a female then throw it in (of course, after qt). Would that cause any issues? Many thanks!

Never heard of a 3” male scribbled. All of the ones I have ever seen have been way larger. Can you post a pic??

You usually can’t tell the sex until they are about 5-6 inches. So you might be rolling the dice

All right I’ll post them when I get home

Hmm I see. Unless I get two juveniles? Are they hermaphroditic?

Here’s two pictures of him in the qt

What makes you think that is a male? Looks like a standard female to me.

I really don't know how to differentiate between a male and a female. I thought it was a male due to the pattern on its body. Can you tell me how to differentiate between a male and a female?

All right, so in this case, which would be advisable? Add a smaller/same size female or a larger female/male?

That fish already looks small for a scribbled. I would go with a bigger one if your DT can handle it.

Is a larger female alright? So that means the larger female would eventually turn into a male right?

Ok, so instead of creating a new thread, I decided to bump up an old one under the same title.

My LFS got a shipment of two scribbled angelfish. However, the larger of the two is not eating. They say that it was eating pellets then it stopped eating. They tried feeding mysis and it ate one and then when he came near, it stopped (I guess it became too afraid). I'm actually going to visit the LFS tomorrow to check it out before I purchase it. I'll be bringing NLS 1mm pellets (the normal and the Algaemax) and PE Mysis 2mm pellets to try (they feed AF pellets, I assume because it's too small). Any thoughts? Been wanting to bring a pair home.

Heres's a video. The right scribbled is supposedly the larger one. Looks so freaked out.

You should experiment with a variety of foods until it picks its favorite food, and multiple times daily.
Try to feed mysis and stay away from the tank. and its better to keep it alone in QT tank in a quit and dim area. some angels can be stressed while there is a lot of activity and light around the tank.

Actually I don't have much experience with scribbled angel, I have been looking for one for a while , but its hard to get one here in this part of world.

It's still in the LFS actually so I really have not much control. But it did allow me to bring my own set of foods tomorrow to try and entice it to eat.

I'd bring the ff. tomorrow:
1mm NLS pellets
1mm NLS Algaemax pellets
2mm PE Mysis pellets
Reef Masstick
Garlic Guard

They already have mysis so let's see tomorrow. Hope it will have one type as its favorite

Scribbled angels are not that picky when it comes to eating. I had to treat mine for flukes during QT which is sadly to say an almost normal thing these days. Thanks

Good news! Apparently the fish is settling in in its new section of the tank. This is quite longer than the usual “cube sections” which gives it more swimming room. I visited today and boy is it eating! Will take the beauty home next week after I finish quarantining my Chrysurus!

P.S.They’re the largest pair of scribbleds. My next assignment would be pairing them in my QT.
