Hi everyone, I am looking for some help. I have a Pajama CardinalFish that Was introduced to my BioCube 32 a few days ago. I noticed this morning that he has a white spot on one eye. Any ideas what it could be? I don’t want this to infect any of my fish.

From this angle, the eye appears to be cloudy. Is that what you see, or is there a distinct spot on the surface of the eye?

Looks like probably an injury, perhaps a run in with a tank mate? If injury, low risk to other fish in the tank. However, if an infection is present, you will need to QT the fish for treatment.

It looks like it’s a spot bulging out of his eye. Looks like a frozen shrimp stuck to his eye. I see no other signing of infection if that is what it is….

thanks for your help!

If the spot is feathery or growing and pure white, I lean towards a possible bacterial infection, but since the condition happened overnight, it could be only a bruised eye that will heal naturally. You can observe for a day, maybe two to observe and see if any changes occur. But, be prepared for QT with an antibiotic if the condition worsens.

Do you have the ability to QT and do you have any antibiotics?

Review the link describing QT protocol. At this point, any value of the copper or prazi treatments described there has been lost. However, if these ailments present themselves in the future, you will know what will be required.

That link also describes how top set up a QT. For just one small fish, a 10 gallon aquarium might work, but typically a 20 gallon or larger tank is used.

Kanaplex is often recommended for popeye. Dosage is added to the water. Other antibiotics will also work depending on whats available to you.

You can use Maracyn 1 (a form of erythromycin) - or Maracyn II

EDIT @threebuoys post appeared while I was writing mine. kanaplex is also a good choice. Often, though - this does go away on its own. Make sure your parameters are excellent. Good luck!!

Maracyn 1 for 5 days is my best recommendation in a quarantine setting
