Came home from the LFS to find my 2 ocellaris clowns looking very pale and lathargic. The tank is a newly cycled 10g. They are the only fish in there. We have had them for a week. Since we have been home we have fed them and they ate well. They have been looking less lathargic and have a little more energy.

Water temp 77f
Salinity 1.023

Pics!?

Any heavy breathing? Reddish gills? Scratching? Flashing? Hiding from light? Peing skin? Spots? Dusting? Discoloration in blotches?

No heavy breathing, no reddish gills, no scratching, no skin peeling, not hiding from light, no spots, no white spots or dusting. When I came home the discoloration was around their lips and gills, since I have been home I have fed them, they ate very well. I was out of ammonia tests, so I did a 75% water change. Their color has gotten a lot better leading up to the water change.

Well that’s odd. I’m glad they’re looking better but I don’t know what’s going on!

Temp may be a hair low but that should not cause it. I shoot for 78-80

I read somewhere online from a post on a forum years ago that when clownfish sleep for a long time they turn a little pale. And as they wake up their color slowly comes back. Has anyone have any knowledge of this or heard about this? It’s the only thing that really makes sense. I was gone all day yesterday and I don’t have my light timer yet. They sat in pitch black darkness for probably 7-8 hours. When I came home and turned the lights on and they had a rude awakening.

Their is your problem. Mine turned almost “Albino” overnight. They return to full colors after about 15-30 minuets. No worry[emoji6]

Mine used to get pale like this too, when they were in quarantine with only the room lights. It doesn't happen in the DT with reef lights on a timer.
