Hi guys, just got my fish order in and everything is good except my yellow watchman goby is completely pale! Is this just the stress from shipping? I've read they go pale at night so mayber that's the issue but theres not a speck of yellow on him!

It’s likely shipping stress however a photo is best to help :)
There are true Cryptocentrus cinctus that can go brown for no known reason (one of the many mysteries we don’t seem to research into further). However there is also a possibility you got a species of Cryptocentrus that isn’t a cinctus.

Mine definitely has a brown tint. But he’s pretty fat and happy so I never worried about it.

This is how mine looks. Purchased as "yellow watchman goby". I now believe it is simply a "watchman goby", which I believe is a different species (I could be completely wrong also). Still a great fish!

Ah ok...A bit bummed as part of the reason i bought him was to add color to the tank. That and the site shows a yellow one and doesnt mention it could be white. Will still give him a good home though.

Same. Wanted that color. Alot of mixed info it seems online (what else is new). Some say it's a m/f thing but I think it's a diff species.. Just added a yellow coris wrasse for that pop and it's definitely yellow ;)

The m/f theory has been disproven by many as you find natural pairs of both colours. Yes they can pair together but it’s also known there’s breeding pairs of just one colour.
Different species altogether isn’t impossible however the markings are almost identical on both so it’s more likely they’re the same species but they’re different subspecies.

same with me, I was sold a yellow watchman 3 years ago which looked same as yours, it never turned yellow, it still looks like yours.

I'm glad I saw this thread cause I was even thinking of posting a "help ID my fish" post to ask what kind of fish I have. It might be a watchman, it looks like a watchman, but its not yellow watchman.
