so I have a really cool rock that is infested with (I forgot the name) but I'll post a pic. The guy at the LFS said its really toxic and I should throw the whole rock away.. But I really really like the shape. So my question is, if I bleach the rock and then scrub them off can it still harm me? There are a lot, they grew on every rock in the tank

I've read of people doing that and some of the juice remains and nuked there tank.

Wear eye protection and gloves if it was me personally I would leave them be or take them to LFS and swap if for another rock as is the rock honestly worth the risk !!!

Personally I would just frag off the palys with bonecutters (CAREFULLY). Wear eye protection, gloves and mask (they may squirt their toxins out). I've only fragged them once before but it wasn't that hard although it was a little scary when the squirted, was very glad I was wearing glasses. I've been warned not to use a bandsaw as that can heat it up and cause the toxins to become airborn.

It's really not worth the risk, imo. These can be serious if not dealt with properly. Isn't there a LFS you can trade it in for another piece of LR?

When I swapped tanks I had a lot of nice rocks with palys on them. I just put them outside in a safe place, away from my dogs, and let them bake in the 115 degree heat + direct sun. Months later, I reused them.

Well I only asked one place and they said they would just throw it out. It didn't sound like I could trade it out

yea i would definitely not cook cook or scrub the paly off of the rock either get rid of it or trade it for another rock or if you don't want to get through them in the garbage just give it to the store they may not want to pay you for it but im sure they have no probably selling something they got for free

Take that rock out and let it sit outside free from pets and every week spray it down with your hose or pressure sprayer.
Just DONT cook it indoors!!

Yes good advice if you do it outside when you shoot it with the hose do not be close cause idk how far the paly can shoot its toxin just be careful is all im saying rather safe then sorry

We had a local guy attempt to use hot water to "cook" the palys off of his rock. This aersolized the palytoxin. His roommate found him on the floor in the bathroom 45 minutes later. He was taken to the hospital and after a brief 9 day stay, he was allowed to go home. Dont take unnecessary chances with these things - the risk is real. You can always get another piece of rock.

Another option would be putting up an ad on Craigslist or Facebook offering to exchange your paly rock for some dry or empty rocks. Some people love those things....

Amen!!

Julian Sprung just gave a really good presentation on palytoxin at MACNA, and if memory serves, he said there's a videotaped version of the speech from a prior event floating around on the internet somewhere. If you can find that, it would be well worth your time to view it. I haven't tried to track it down myself, but I imagine you could source it quickly enough by googling his name and "palytoxin." Just a thought.

why not just frag what you don't want and leave the rest. I have the same coral in my reef and I actually like them. I refuse to spend crazy amounts of money on fancy super expensive coral. if you can, take the rock and isolate it on the sand so it doesn't spread. it sounds as if you like the coral, so why just throw it out?

It hanks for all the replies, I'll look into the presentation. The reason I don't keep it is because my girl doesn't like that it's not safe and we are new. So until we are more experienced we will just replace the rock

They are perfectly safe if left alone no different to a lion fish it won't harm you but go poking it and grabbing it and it would.

People often keep paly's, nothing wrong with them they look nice. Frag them and give them to people or trade.

I have some in my reef all be it they moody at minute since I been running 0 nitrates and 0 phosphate they been moody.

I actually like them as well they won't spread to far in mine as I doubt they would take on a 10" bubble tip anenomie well one hopes not

All corals have toxins. It is how you handle them and protect yourself. Yes, these are dangerous, but just take precautions and don't pic at them or handle them. I have been a victim of palytoxin twice and it is not fun. Thank god never a hospital stay as I knew what happened immediately so could react. If it scares you, trade to another reef keeper. I hate just killing animals.

However, leaving it out in the sun for weeks (away from pets) will work. Then acid bath. Research how to do that too as it is dangerous. Simple, but also requires careful handling.

Do you just want to get rid of them because they may be toxic? Or do you just not like them? I have them in my tank and think they are cool. I would just keep them unless you need room for something else.
