Hey im thinking of adding some new fish. I have a 9 inch panther grouper. What is a good fish that he wont eat? Hes also with an adult yellow tang and an 11" orange spot rabbitfish.

Panther groups are tough...they get so big that they'll eventually outgrow nearly every tank and eat every tankmate.

Eels, maybe? Large puffers, large angels, large triggers, other groupers maybe? Out of curiosity, what is the tank size, and are you planning on keeping this grouper long-term?

Anything that won't fit into his mouth. Mine is less than 1/2 that size and he's a "hoover". He was a gift from GF and about 1" when I got him 3 years ago. Added a six-line at the same time and both were great tank mates - until last fall. When I was hand feeding the tank all the fish came up to the corner of the tank & I guess my grouper didn't like the six-line competing for food and he swallowed him whole. I was horrorfied but kind of knew it was a matter of time. He's a gentle giant but a hungry one.

I have to keep him, the wife wont let me give him away lol. She loves the fish. Ill be honest its a cool fish, but sucks i cant add a damsel. The tank is 200 gallons of space 250 total volume.

He can mostly eats frozen supermarket shrimp. Once every day or two. Plus eats sinking algae wafers for the tangs because hes hungry i guess.

I was thinking of a clown tang.

Dont want more predators because its a mixed reef lol. I think the panther grouper is slowing in growth. May max out at 12".

Yes they are cool fish but they get uglier as they age. I've heard they turn a gray and loose the spots. But yes they're like a dog, I can literally pet mine and he's not skittish at all. I usually feed him first then the nems in my tank because he's quick enough to grab food from them. A very sociable fish too, at night he cuddles up in a corner of the rocks with my Foxface.

Too bad you don't want any more predators, eels are very cool with groupers. They often hunt together in the wild.

Perhaps a larger sized trigger or filefish? Their odd shape and tough skin would make them difficult meals.

They can eat almost anything half their size. Be careful. They are great hunters. Mine once ate a coris wrasse that was his size.

Mine shares a 120g tank w/2 Maroon Clowns (16 years old) a filefish & a 6" Foxface and they all get along. I think our grouper spends more time dodging 10 BTAs and a Carpet nem.

Anything that can fit in his mouth (and believe me, the mouth is deceiving it gets much larger than it looks) is fair game, other than perhaps lionfish. They're really neat fish but so limiting for this reason. They're not particularly aggressive but they'll eat anything they can.

Mine shares his space with the yellow tang and orange spot lol. Some times the yellow tang makes him mad and he shows aggression lol.

What size fish would be smallest guys? Most fish come to my lfs pretty small.

Ive thought about an eel. Would be neat. Would it eat my hermit crabs?

An eel would be ok depending on which you decide on. You'll need a fish-eater, not a crustacean eater. The dilemma will be that it needs to be big enough that the grouper won't inhale it but small enough that it won't try to eat the other fish. And don't forget it's maximum size (my gymnothorax undulatus topped off at ~4'). They can also live for 20+ years and are pretty much impossible to rehome.
