Par meter

How many people use par meters while upgrading lights. I am going to be upgrading my leds to better leds but i dont want to buy a $400 par meter for a one time use

The closes one to me is an 1 1/2 hours away and i only get to go down there once a month so that wont work. Could i just judge it and just watch my corals closely

Have a local reef club? Our club has an apogee that we loan out to members.
