I have had a reef tank for about three years now and really have never had any problems. I add hardness plus and alakalinity plus every three days. I have lost some types of acros but thats really it. Should I be testing my own water? I get it tested every 2-3 weeks id say. Its a 30 gallon nano. At the moment I have zoanthids palys gold hammer war coral monti cap some species of acro clam maze brain. And its all growing very well. I just hear everyone testing their water ever two three days themselves and wonder if I should be doing it also or if I am since ive been successful so far and having it tested at my LFS

I use the diy two part which does testing for alk ever few days or weeks or so.

You might check that out.

Personally, I feel the tests are easy and prefer to do it myself.

But that's just my .02

Pick up a Red Sea Pro test kit to test for alk, calc and mag. You need to maintain this troika of reef chemistry at a relatively steady state to maintain hard corals.

I too am a homemade recipe user….I use the recipes found HERE.
