Hi I’ve asked around about this before but can’t seem to get an answer that makes sense. I have a tank that’s been cycling for a month and a half with only snails in it as livestock. It was cycled with Dr. Tim’s, and established media from a 7 year old tank. It also has live sand. My ammonia is being processed and so is my nitrite within 24 hours, but I would expect that my nitrates would be high. I’ve been dozing ammonium chloride for some weeks since starting the cycle. My Nitrates keep going down even though i’m not changing water. How ? Thanks

Depends how much ammonia you added and what you consider “high” nitrates and what test kit you are using, the test kit could be giving you a wrong result or you may be reading it wrong.

Think you need to look at this from the point of view that nothing strange is happening here, you are either not adding the ammonia in amounts you think you are or your tests are incorrect or your tests are correct and what you think is either high or low is in fact inline with what is expected.

Hard to say with no numbers to go off.
