So 7'x3' tank, has 3/4" bottom brace around perimeter and two across so basically has 3 28"x36" sections, hopefully that makes sense.

Because I'd like to have wrasse and sawfish, I want some sand, but it would be nice to not have a full sand bottom to get some of the BB benefits, less cleaning, less worry about blowing sand around.

Starboard is pretty expensive, but my thought now is 2) 1/2"x28"x36"pieces of starboard stacked on top of each other making them 1"thick making a 1³/⁴" "depression" in the middle of the tank where I can put sand.

Then I think about what can I put in the void under the starboard? Are there thicker cheaper materials than starboard? Is 1 ³/⁴" even enough sand? Should I just do a full sand bed?

Any advice would be appreciated.

If your dead set on burying wrasses i would go full sand bed. Just my opinion.
