Partially Dissolved Cap found in RedSea Reef Energy AB+

I've using my second bottle of AB+ and started noticing black particles in the liquid. I thought it was some normal precipitate and didnt think much of it. However, today when I shook a bit harder than usual, I heard something hard in the bottle and fetched out a partially dissolved cap nozzle with my tweezers.

It can't be from my cap because my cap still has the nozzle. It was completely and perfectly sealed when I got it. From the looks of this plastic, it seems like it's been there for a very long time. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

I'm already 1/3 through the bottle so I guess I've been target feeding my corals chucks of black plastic for months

I don’t use that product though it looks to be a manufacturer mishap. I don’t think it will harm your coral though you may want to send these pics and a batch number to the manufacturer to let them know.

It probably is not actually dissolved, just broken into little tiny pieces. If it was dissolved you wouldn't be able to see any pieces floating around.

It's doing alright. I did have unexplainable frag deaths but I don't know if it's because of the plastics. However, I am dealing with a sudden case of diatoms...

I reached out to RedSea but haven't heard back yet.

Thanks, that's comforting to hear. My corals still seem ok. I think the plastics/silicon might have fuelled a diatom outbreak, however.

I dont think plastic have short term effects on livestock in the tanks, but long term ? 5+ years i dunno. Ive had uv sterilizers leach black plastic in my tank and noticed no ill effects. It cant be avoided either as uv breaks down all plastic. Everyones uv will do it.

Would i wanna drink water with leached plastic though ? Probly not

I had a similar issue. The big bottle had a lot of plastic flakes floating around in the solution.

FWIW, unless the plastic is one of the new materials that are designed to degrade in landfills, the plastics are not dissolving. The polymers in a lid like that are not going to be water soluble, or else it would be a wholly inappropriate choice for the lid of a bottle containing water.

I expect the plastics bits and parts got chewed up by manufacturing machines prior to entering the product, and are not a concern. Just fish them out.
