Hey folks.
RIght now I have a mesh bag in my sump with some activated charcoal in it. I have it near my return pump so there is some flow going through it but it’s definitely not as much and I was wondering if it’s a waste to do it this way? I was running it in a mesh bag in my filter sock but the flow was strong enough that I was getting a lot of charcoal fines grinding up and showing up in my skimmer so I wonder if this will work okay?
Thanks!

If the water just ends up going around it and not through it then it is kinda useless. Maybe consider some sort of reactor or a higher flow area of the sump if possible.

Why are you running activated carbon? There are reasons to run it but rarely do you need it all the time. As a chemical sponge, it doesn’t need much flow to absorb most of the chemicals it’s used for.

I am no expert on this but I remember BRS talking about using a coarser grade to prevent this issue:

I like to Overkill, so I use a pressurized canister filter for ponds it's designed for 900 gallon filtration and it's on the return pump discharge, the canister filter holds 7 lb of activated carbon, in about 6 months I will remove it.

Not to shabby
