PDR's Hot Mess

Always interested in palys, zoas and palys are my favorite. Given that we are located near each other we may be meeting. I think I mentioned in another thread that I have a spare chaeto culture growing incase I meet a local reefer who'd like it. If you are planning to utilize macroalge your sump you're welcome to my chaeto free of charge (I'm not going to charge anyone for algae ha ha ha). For the surface stuff I'd recommend adding a dense sponge to your filtration, I think the sump will eliminate it for sure.

Good to hear. And WOW that's alot of evaporate

I know right?

Add me to the list for frags! Following!

Will do! ;)

looks very neat and tidy! great job! can't wait to see future progress!

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm still not sure if I'm going to be setting up a fuge again. I use filter floss in my HOB, but as of tomorrow (hopefully) I will be running a sump and socks. Just let me know if you ever want to stop by and take a look sometime.

Due to some boneheaded mistakes on my end (and a couple mistakes from brs), I wasn't able to plumb the sump like I had planned. After staring at the plumbing wall at Lowes for 45 min (plumbing is NOT my forte), I finally figured out what I needed to make what I had work. I glued the pipes together tonight and I had installed the baffles in my sump earlier today.

If all goes as planned, I should have the sump up and running sometime tomorrow! :)

The sump is up and running and while it looks like a 4-year-old put it together (who knew silicone was so messy...), it gets the job done! :)

The surface scum is completely gone and it's so nice to have an ato, especially now that I am evaporating more than 2 gallons a day!

This is before cleaning up the cords and such.

I still need to adjust it to get it silent, but the gurgle buster is doing a great job so far.

The good news is, after getting some hands-on experience with some plumbing (as minor as it was) it has really helped me to better understand the concepts of the more sophisticated setups, which will come in use when I upgrade.

I upped my feeding a couple of weeks ago and I now feed the following daily:
1ml of Reef Energy A & B
2 scoops of reef chili and 2 scoops of reef roids broadcast fed (the small scoop that comes with reef chili, idk how much it is).
Reef Frenzy soaked in selcon for the fish

I also just started dosing phyto. Started with the minimum amount every 2 days.

I ran a full range of tests today and are as follows:
Salinity: 1.0265
Ph: 8.14
Temp: 78.5
Alk: 7.8
Ca: 450-470
Mg: 1470-1500
No3: 0
Po4: 0
Iodine: .06 (red sea test kit, not sure I trust it though)

I would love to have some detectable nutrients so I am going to increase the reef energy dose and possibly increase the chili and roids dose as well. I am scheduled to do a water change in 2 days, but at this point, I don't know if it would be worth it. I may be able to get away with monthly changes on this tank.

As far as coral growth, the zoas are still adjusting but are slowly growing, the mushrooms have dropped several babies and the yellow leather and the fuzzy lobo have both grown considerably.

I finally have flow I am happy with, and I should be able to lower the t5's to their final position next week. After that, I plan to be as hands-off as possible for as long as possible to give everything a really good chance to settle in and start growing.

I will try to get some updated pictures soon.

Just a quick update. I'm not sure where I left off, but I am back to running filter socks (changed 1x a week), daily 2% wc's and have started vacuuming the sandbed 1x a week.

I have upped my daily feeding schedule:

12:00 pm
- 1/2 cube of Hikari spirulina brine or Omega enriched brine
- 2ml reef energy
- 1 small scoop each of reef chili, benereef, reef roids

7:00pm
- A small chunk of Reef Frenzy soaked in selcon
- 4 ml of mikes premium phyto
- 1 small scoop each of reef chili, benereef, reef roids

I still have no detectable nitrates or phosphates. I really don't know how as much as I feed.

Here are a couple of pics I took at night with a flashlight. Shows off the colors better imo.

I uploaded this on another thread but check out the pulsing on this leather.

And the lack of pulsing from my crap xenia lol.

I got the avast porthole, so I plan to get some better pics soon.

Long story short, I have decided to dedicate this tank to zoas for now. I have moved most of the leathers and all of my mushrooms to the DT.

I have been battling some kind of algae/bacteria/fungus on my rocks and frag plugs. I'm not really concerned about it on the rock, but I fear it may be why I am having some issues with the zoas. I did a hydrogen peroxide dip on the frags 2 days ago and so far it hasn't touched it. It is also pretty difficult to remove manually. It is almost impossible to see top down, you can only really see it from the side.

I have stopped the Reef Energy A&B and the daily coral feedings to see if it makes an impact on the algae (if that's what it is).

Here is a picture of the "fuzz" that is on the plugs.

Updated fts after removing most of the other coral. Most of the zoas are still closed from the peroxide dip.

That GSP seems to have grown a bit since last I saw, same with those super palys.

That is just some extra gsp from my display, the frags haven't grown much. Nothing really has except my xenia...

Following, awesome build so far.
What are the squares your frags are sitting on?
4"x4" something? Link?
Your tank has me wanting to go this route instead of egg crate!

I ended up moving all my zoas (except the mind blowing palys) back into my dt for now.

There is just something off about this tank. I was having issues with the zoas that I thought was related to lighting, but now I just don't know. The tank still has no detectable nutrients which seems to defy logic with the lack of filtering and amount of feeding I have done.

Within hours of moving the zoas to the dt, they are already looking better. It's crazy how fast some of them recovered. My current plan is to let this tank mature for a few months while I let the zoas grow out in the dt, but after that IDK what my plans are.

I decided that this tank really isn't big enough to grow out the leathers I was wanting to, so I know I won't be going back to attempting that. I may end up using this as a frag tank instead of a grow out tank, or I may move the zoas back once things have matured and stabilized. I would love to set up a RFA breeding tank, but the several I own have never spawned, so I'm not too confident I could make it work lol. I have also attempted a bta propagation tank a couple of times and always ended up changing courses for some reason or another. I would love to actually do one for real and have contemplated converting this tank to that.

Sorry, I know that was a lot of rambling, but it feels nice it get it off my chest. :)

Thanks! 3"x3" https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/coral-frag-tiles-oceans-wonders.html
Eggcrate is great for organizing smaller frags, but I much prefer larger tiles for growing out coral.

Thank you so much, I love the idea of using these as my frags are growing down the sides of the plugs ON TO the egg crate, if I used these then
I would have a better spread. This is for my low boy frag tank also, maybe I'll just place some small egg crate in the back of it.

Steve

You could try out SPS for a bit? They really aren't that hard and seem to be pretty popular right now, especially as technology makes their care easier.

However, I do think a BTA tank would be really fun too, especially since the ones in your display look really cool.
