I have had a few types of PEs do this. Sometimes the mouth opens up wide and the stem will start to twist up. Other peope have this problem? What should I do?

i've had mine do that too in my 12gallon at work...I thought it was from the hair algae problem I have but after seeing your picture i think i'm wrong about the hair algae.

Can you describe your water quality parameters? Also please describe any recent changes or swings in any of those parameters. Current lighting, as well as any changes to lighting, and waterflow info around the polyp. Thanks

I did move them to more flow. My alkalinity bobs between 8 and 9. My Ca stays about 410. I have to use 2 part every day and that's why it bobs a little bit. The flow should be OK. I have a Koralia 3 on each side of my 40 long (4' long). These have been under my new LEDs (3 48" Reefbrite strips) about 10" under water. I really don't test my nitrates or ammonia because I've ony got one fish. These are my frag tanks. About 4 months ago, I did pull the sand out of my frag tanks and seitched them with black eggcrate. Before that the tank had been set up a couple of years. Do you think it could be water quality, as in nitrates and ammonia? i have many other frags in my frag tanks, like Tubbs bues, acans, sunny Ds, blastos and favias, etc., and they look all right.

In the pic, you can see there's some algea , so I'm guessing that you have a Phosphate\Nitrate problem going on. Since pulling out the sandbed, how have your water changes been going? RO/DI water?

If they were mine, I'd take care of the algea and more then likley dip in CoralRx. Another thing I don't like in the picture are the pimples and white spots. I've never had zoa pox (knock on furan) so I'm reluctant to make that call. Maybe someone with more experience with it can chime in here....

doesnt look like zoa pox to me i have battled it twice and beat it, only lost one frag to it so far, (knock on wood) and havnt seen any in a while. i have some PE that took a while to open up as well and started out with 5 and now have 3.. not sure what happened to the other 2. evreything else i have is doing great.

Wonder if you could dip these guys in hydrogen peroxide to kill off the HA??? Dilute the peroxide of course..... I would do some water chasnges and consider the peroxide dip....

I have nothing but trouble with my PE. I had a frag with 2 heads after 3day they never opened then were gone. The next time I got two more heads and put them in better flow area and lost one. The one I have is doing good. I would move them into a good flow area. I don't know about those lights mine is doing good about 8" down but I have 4 t5s.

That sure looks like bryopsis to me, which roots into both the plug and the flesh of the paly, H2O2 will not help that. When faced with this situation I try to isolate a single polyp, free from the hated algea and start again. Good luck.
The 1 open looks like a magician, you sure its a PE? (not that it would have any bearing on the situation)
I have also seen hair algae do what I like to call "ring around the collar", which seems to choke the head off.
