I am getting good growth and encrustment from my sps, just not seeing the polyp extension I would like. Parameters are: Temp 77f, Dkh 7.8, cal 450, mag 1500, po4 .06, no3 0 to .5, k 420, sg 1.025. 165 gallon 6 foot tank with 2 gyre 250s and 2 mp40s at each end of the tank. Fish are yellow, purple, chevron and naso tang, melanarus wrasse, 2 clowns, 2 banggais, coral beauty, and 2 dragon face pipefish. Lighting is 8 lamp 5 foot t5 with reef brite vho.

You can chase it or just forget about it... either way is probably going to yield the same results. PE is mostly for gas exchange and happy corals will not risk extending them too far. The polyps are out more at night when the zoox is not doing releasing gasses. I would not worry about this unless an notoriously hairy corals is not in your tank, and then I would blame the fish, crab or shrimp for snacking before I would look at the parameters for growing and well colored corals.

If you want to view your stuff with lots of PE, then turn all of the pumps off and come back in an hour and they will start to extend so that they can breathe.

Go with color and growth for signs of success, not PE.

Do you feed them any planktonic foods? Mine extend when there is food in the water.

Thank you!! I will give that a try, I have a milli that was as hairy as cousin it when it was in original owners tank. In mine it is encrusting and coloring with minimal pe.

Watch your coral beauty for a while, that's likely the culprit. Almost every time one of these threads pops up, the person has an angel in the tank. You may think it's not nipping but put it in the sump for a couple weeks and see if your polyps come out.

This, I had a coral beauty and once I got rid of it, I had great polyp extension. Also, when I started dosing acropower, I noticed more polyps...

Agreed. I've kept pygmy angels in the past. No polyps out when they're in the tank, IMO. Might not ever see it nip either.

Today will be day 3 of trying to trap the Coral Beauty. I had a blue velvet damsel in there that I trapped on day one. The clown is taking the food from the trap and meeting the CB at the opening of the trap and feeding him.;Rage

Try at night after the lights have been off for a few hours. Take a bright flashlight or turn on all your lights on at once and you can reach in with your hand and grab him out.

This tank has so many nooks and crannies, it is almost impossible. I will give it a shot though!!

Haha, what?! The clown is feeding the CB?

None of my fish help each other. The Midas Blenny even craps the water all over the other fish when I put food in.
