I have heard that pellet reactors should run in the dark or in cabinet for best performance. Is this true? I wanted to grow some micro algae in my sump, 150 mixed reef. Thanks for the help !!!

Hi @Bug235

I have not run one, hopefully some one will come by that has. I would guess it would depend on the manufacturer. Most models I have seen are built with the acrylic colored so outside light doesn’t come in allowing the led light inside to grow the algae.

lets see if someone else comes by.

Thanks just trying to see if myth or fact

Never heard about them running in the dark. The pellets are a carbon source like vodka dosing. Bacteria grow on them, consume the pellets over time and break down nitrate. I have had my 2 little fishes pellet reactor running for yrs in my lit cabinet with no problems.

Great thanks for the reply, Im with you on this but just wasn’t sure there is so many different opinions out there !!!

I use to have the little piece of foam on the top of the reactor that 2 little fishes gives. It always clogged over time, stopped using it and now its pretty much maint free.
