if I understand right the pellets feed the bacteria that keeps the nitrates etc in check. Instructions say a minimum and maximum per gallon - my initial thought is why wouldn’t everyone use the maximum? It’s since become clear that the pellets tumble more if you have nearer the minimum.
However, I’m keen to understand the theory. Does the more pellets mean more bacteria? Does less pellets mean they will simply break down quicker? What’s the optimum to use and why?
 
Pellets are the carbon that feeds bacteria. More food, more bacteria, more nutrient reduction. You need to find a balance of how many pellets to use to keep nutrients where you want them.
