Does anybody know an alternative to buying replacement filter media. Maybe buy a roll elsewhere and cutting it myself?

Go to a fabric store and a buy a roll of the poly pad stuff, or just the regular fluff works.

A couple more questions: I put about 20 small blue leg hermit crabs in a couple of weeks ago. Not sure how to feed them. I know they eat left over food and algae from the bottom. I drop pellets in sometimes that sink to the bottom. Is this sufficient? Also put in a banded coral shrimp. He just hides most of the time. I drop a tiny piece of raw shrimp near him every couple of days. Any other ideas?

Would you normally not need to feed them at all and let them scrounge the bottom?

Normally, no. If there is algae or I'm feeding fish and corals I don't supplement hermit crabs. I also rarely put hermits into my systems any more, because I like my snails to be alive (they want their shells). I will supplement feeding for shrimp, serpent and brittle stars, other sea stars for sure, and large urchins (which are great to have).
