I was just wondering if you might be able to tell me if this is a True Percula or a False?

Thanks

I think its an occelaris (false perc). I think I'm counting more than 10 spines but its kinda hard to from a picture.

Sorry i should say that i bought these from my lfs and they were supposed to get me a pair of true perculas. If they are not true percs then i will take
Them back and get what i paid for. They are rather small about 1.5 inches in length
I was worried that they might be false percs but they assured me they were true percs

Sorry but this is an A. Occellaris. You can tell by looking at the eyes. The area around the actual eye of your fish is black. A truck percula has orange as can be seen in this picture.

Well the pic may just be casting shadows on the eyes but true percs also tend to have a more rounded dorsal. False percs tend to look more like what you have frog ... looks a bit more like a mohawk. The middle bar on false percs are usually more sideways triangle like yours, while they tend to vary a lot in pattern and this is by no way a means to tell, all things combine, your fish looks like a very classic occelaris.

Ok here is another pic...not the greatest, they keep moving around...LOL

Are not orange around the eye socket like the one you post k2parkstar....so it might look like I will be calling my LFS in the morning to see what they say.

Thanks Squishie89...I acutally made that rock...from one of the diy reciepes for live rock. I have one I made that is kinda big...and it takes up too much realestate inside the biocube, so I did not use it.

That is an occellaris for sure. Once again look at the eye in the new pic. The center looks clear like you can see right through it. That is another trait of occellaris. I'll second that in the cool rock work as well, but it may prohibit good water flow and cause dead spots. Dead spots are areas with no water flow, thus detritus will settle there and algae growth will occur.

Ok, thanks for the heads up k2parkstar...I was really hoping that there was a shadow on the eyes...I tried counting the spins on the dorsal fin but its kinda hard to tell. I will call the LFS this morning

Ok, just finished talking with the LFS and they informed that they came from a local breeder here in the DFW area and they are certain they are true peculas and that they are only about 6 months old and they have some "morphing" to do before they look like they are supposed to. Does this sound right??

Doesn't sound right to me. The eyes don't lie, and they don't morph. The only change you see is that they orange should become brighter and the black to get darker. You should pm other clown fish retailers on the forum, especially our sponsors. A second opinion doesn't hurt, but I'm fairly certain I'm correct.

Just Google image both ocellaris and percula yourself. It will be clear to you then (I'd say they're ocellaris though)

Not right at all. There is no 'morphing' to be done. Sounds like the breeder is confused on his broodstock as well.

Personally, if the store owner cannot tell that that clown is a false perc then I would find another LFS.
