What in your opinions is the perfect equilibrium between affordability and stability when it comes to aquarium size?
Around here people start with 55s not knowing the pain that awaits them with such a skinny tank.

In my opinion a 75 gallon seems to be what I would pick had price been an issue. It is a perfect rectangle, which can accommodate every style of light. The shape also allows good aquascape and with a deep sad bed you do by need overkill lighting.

Sumps that small are easy to diy and all the equipment that size is always on Craigslist at the very least. Every LFS I go to has 24-48 inch everything haha. If someone gets more into the hobby, upgrades are only a savings away :)

Biocubes are the other popular economy tank, however stock they are inferior to most setups. Biocubes are everywhere and cheap as can be.

So what would you recommend to a beginner who doesn't want to invest an arm and a leg just yet?

Im with you, I advise the 75g for beginners. Its big enough for most to get the Tang they want.

I like my 55g but since it is my first tank I would not know better I guess but have had no problems with it

Ok let me rephrase that, everyone that has a tank gets told they should have a tang if they don't already want one themselves hahahaha

I have owned 2 reef tanks in the last 15 years. the first was a 75, and now my current 180. the 75 is a very good sized tank for anyone to start off with.

I started big with my first tank (265 gallons), yeah yeah I am crazy, ok. I got the tank, LR, return pumps, and sump for a steal thanks to craigslist. I am a DIY guy so the stand, lights (rapidled), plumbing, re-siliconed the tank, etc. helped to keep costs down. The cost per month to keep the tank running isn't too bad and I personally think the larger the tank/water volume the better stability you will have. I don't think tackling a big tank is that much harder then a smaller tank, the fundementals are still the same. I would suggest that anyone planning their first tank talk with others a get a price range of what it will cost and then go as big as you are comfortable with.

What species of tang would you recommend for 75s? Yellow eyes kole tang is my favorite in that size range.
There are a few that would fit, but the ones I like in that range would definately be the White Tail Bristletooth and the Lemon Tang.

Now on to angels! What's too big? There is a major debate amongst reefers about what are some reef safe angels that stay small enough for a 75? What is too big?
