Just got a chiller installed and I can actually get my tank cooler than the 80-81 its been running at.
What is the ideal temp to shoot for? I was told 78, does this sound right? I have fish and a mixed bag of corals (LPS, SPS, Soft, Mushrooms

i agree that 78 is likely most peoples spot but i'll add some nuance.
if you happen to either be running 2 heaters, using a controller to set the min and max or both it's not a bad idea to set your parameters a little ways apart (like 78.0-78.9) so the thermostat isn't always flipping the heater on and off or running both heaters all the time to make up small increments.

I have the heaters set to 77f. By default the chiller kicks on at 79f and cools to 78f. From what I can tell I cant setup the JBJ chiller to chill 1/2 a degree and stop, it seems it only does whole degrees.

Back in the day people used to run over 80 commonly. Every piece of equipment was higher power and higher heat, from pumps to lighting and the tanks adapted and survived. It depends on size, stability in other parameters, but 78 is the standard unless you have a problem keeping it there.

True but living in FL with fans and all 24/7 were only keeping me just at 81f. I dont like riding that fine line.
Also found out that a 1/10hp can cool 175 gallons.
A fine line you say. This is my acro-dominant tank’s yearly summer max temp (Sept 1st). It typically sits from 82-84 through summer here in San Diego.
