Periodically changing marine pure (and the like) blocks?

Hi fellow reefers,

I use marine pure and Maxspect nano-tech bio blocks as extra substrate in my tank. I read somewhere you should replace them now and then (not all at the same time of course). Are you doing that? How often?

I’ve never replaced my marine pure block, it’s been in for around 4 years along with a load of Seachem matrix which I now prefer as it will last forever

Your supposed to maybe give it a rinse every so often to clear any blocked pores, well if you want to, but I haven’t

Marine pure block also been in use for right at 4 years now. Was not even aware about rinsing or replacing.

You don't need to replace them. But a good rinse every once in a while is ok, especially if they are in an area that collects detritus

Strange ... Maxspect writes on their nano-tech bio-block boxes "The Bio-Block should be cleaned or replaced every 6 months for optimal results" ...

Old research into these you can probably easily find some results with marine pure aluminum icp testing. I was just curious because I want a 4" block potentially to set my skimmer on. Kind of a 2 for 1, skimmer stand and a nice bacteria house.

If you never clean it there will eventually be problems. If I were to guess it would be in the 4-5 year range.

Here is what I got after cleaning mine after 3 years - I since rinse it out about every 1-1.5 years.

The next time I cleaned it, it was nowhere near as bad as this but still a TON of detritus came out.
