Hello fellow reefers!
After 12 years of keeping sps aquariums, early this January I decided to break down my 120 gallon all out sps reef. My wife and I made a decision to pull the carpet from the home, and put down hard wood laminate flooring, this also involved painting our entire home in the interior. That said, there was really no choice in keeping the 120, the colonies were very mature, the tank was amazing, but I was ready to take a break.
I was able to get a Waterbox AIO 50g cube, the first one, a prototype that I was hooked up with from the distributor, where I used to work. I did not establish the tank until the home upgrades were complete, and was given the green light. My amazing wife did have some recommendations, cough, cough, demands of the appearance. All equipment had to be contained within the shelf/stand. No extra buckets, bins, reactors, or equipment outside of the aquarium. Also, it had to look clean and organized, aesthetically speaking.
The original design included more equipment, and all out SPS again, so, I was able to procure many of my originals that I passed on to others, as well as 20 new frags. This setup included a kessil a 160 and 250 watt radium se pendant. Things were going well, corals were growing, all in all looking good. Well, Hurricane Irma came and knocked our power out, no generator, only a powerhead running on an inverter as well as battery operated air pump. Fish made it, as did the inverts, some mushrooms, and a few polyps, no sps survivals. Sort of over it at this point, I decided I wanted to create something different, easy, efficient, and very aesthetically clean. It is here where the vision of a low energy, low lying softy bommie was born.
I have spent the last couple of months buying specific corals for specific locations. The system is very clean, organized, with lots of open space. I am using one single piece of Air freighted Fiji Live Rock as the bommie. I would suspect that the piece weighs around 20lbs. Hopefully I can create something as successful as past aquariums, I sure am having fun
