but if any one in the know could give me a positive ID?

Kinda looks like sponge to me.

it's definitely not sponge. jelly/slime to the touch.

The pic looks like sponge. Maybe nudibranch eggs. Can you try to get a more focused close up picture? Maybe use a flashlight to help with lighting
