Hi i was wondering if anyone else has an sps that while at first seemed cool but has turned into a pest? I have one ( not sure what it is) that started out as a frag plug, and a few pieces that broke off the plug. Originally it was attached to a plug that also had a red monti frag on it. It soon encrusted over the monti onlt took a few days once they touched. Now 7months later it has taken over a large area of rock. I scraped some off that was getting close to another frag, and the tiny pieces seem to be living lol. I thought xenia was bad! Here are a couple of moonlit pics, its a green color. Any suggestions on how to stop the encrusting or removing it from areas i dont want it? Corals to place next to it that it wont encrust over?

My pest would be purple pocillopora. It just kind of sprouts off a polyp and starts growing wherever it lands.

If you're wanting to try to keep it under control, you can give it a shot with some kalk paste where you'd like it to stop. That always seems to snuff out my pocillopora sprouts.

I've heard of several folks having red monti caps take over an entire portion of their tank haha, mine is pretty tame though.

Every Monti, Birdsnest, Poci and Stylophora, except for Leng Sy cap. This is why I have a no MBP&S rule.

Its funny that 30 years ago when i first started keeping marine tanks keeping any sps long term was considered master level reefing! Now we have pest sps lol

Green birds nest for me. Grew crazy fast from a 2" frag to a 8 "round colony in under 2 years and was heavily fragged as well. One LFS told me to stop bringing it in for trade.
It may just be the pic but that coral acropora it looks it, is still a small frag. Appears to be starting to take off and shoot up branches. I may be wrong and it may be the size of a basketball if not and its small then sou ds like you need to space out your corals a little more. I like to give sps 3 inches minimum of space from the nearest neighbor.

If your talking about mine, it started as a 3/4 frag. The frag broke of into 2 pieces. The plug had some encrusting on it. Thats the top piece. Thats now about 5 inches and encrusting the rockwork. 1 piece of the frag is the long one, its now about 6inches and encrusting the rock near it. The lower piece was a tiny piece of the frag maybe 1/8 inch. It is now 4-5 inches and creeping down to another frag , while also plating towards another one. I had over 4 inches between each frag. It acts like the blob and grows towards surrounding corals. Its in 3 places and growing in 3 different patterns .

Montipora Confusa. Beautiful coral but grows like a weed. Recently have a piece trying to take over a Homewrecker Colony.
I literally placed a Epoxy mat over it to smother it out.
Bought it 9 years ago, It keeps coming back.
Meteor shower Cyphastria. Another one that takes over. Can’t get rid of it. Traces of it everywhere still growing like 9 years old.
If you own them. Isolation to one rock is key.

Agreed on the Meteor Shower Cyphastrea. That stuff spreads like the wind and will kill anything it can reach that is not too shaded. I have a section of eggcrate in my frag tank that contains mostly cyphastrea. Recently I noticed the cypahstrea has spread on to every beam of the eggcrate and the various colours/forms of cyphastrea are battling it out on the eggcrate battlefield. I am rooting for my pretty ones like Bizarro or JF Party Crasher to win.

Hollywood stunner is a royal pain but fairly easy to remove. My arch nemesis at this point is pavona. Encrusts, can’t kill it but at least it blasts everything with 3” sweeper tentacles.

Purple stylo, red plating Monti.
I’ve got purple stylo popping up in various places in the tank and no clue how. The red plating Monti just grows so fast I can’t hack it back fast enough and the tiny frags that break off while I’m chopping it back settle and grow everywhere!
