Petco CaribSea live sand, why so cheap?

I've bought caribsea sand from Petco and I personally think they are the same. The tank with it is running with no problems.

Not bad considering same bag is $38 on Amazon. Petco probably trying to get rid of it and not sure the shelf life of it.

Just a suggestion... I would not put 200 pounds of sand like that in a tank or it will be blowing everywhere. I always recommend a mix of mostly Caribsea seaflor special grade reef sand with something like the live sand you are looking at. In reality for sand one bag of live is more than sufficient for seeding and rest can be dead sand.

You like the special grade so it doesnt blow around? I really like fine sand.. any way to get finer sand look?

why so cheap is maybe because of a quantity price break. sometimes companies like petco and lowes/home depot can get a better deal on some items because they will buy a truck load of it and distribute it out to their stores. some items it works really good for, some dont. i worked for a electrical distributor, and we could get a better deal on big wire like ser 4/4/2 , but they beat us on house wire 14/2. because they would be ordering 10x as much.

I bought mine too from Petco who represents many stores and two warehouses (Foster and smith). I didnt care as I'm Not Complaining.

I would prefer finer sand too but with any kind of decent flow it will blow and shift. I have always had wrasses that take a dive to sleep at night and they never had a problem with the seafloor.

Great price I agree. I use the special grade, but others have used that Figi without issues.

I’ve used both. I love the look of Fiji pink but it blows around so much and looks pretty unattractive after awhile. I recommend special grade.

I don't use live sand anymore. I have never seen any REAL advantages (unless it is truly live directly from the ocean). I used Caribsea Dry Aragonite Special Grade. I got 40 pound bags for $28/each on Amazon. What size tank are you setting up? I purchased 200 pounds and ended up only using 120, and still have almost a 4" sandbed.

I love the bahama oolite it is very fine and blows around easily. It by far my favorite. The only thing I can think of is buying a large bulk.

I tried oolite before.. IT blew around like crazy.. and my clownfish like to play with the sand and push it around...

I tried to order from petco... it keep saying quantity not available..!>.... I also tried petsmart but the page says "This item is temporarily unavailable ".. lol guess theres no such things as a killa deal.

This is fora 180G.. I just want about 2" of sand.

Mine is also a 180, so for a 2" sandbed I would recommend only getting 120 pounds max. If you are anywhere near the Phoenix area I have 80 pounds of dry sand sitting in the original shipping boxes, never even opened. Would certainly be a "killa" deal. :)

Be careful, I got that stuff, corals started closing. ICP came back with High metals. Ran a magnet over my sand bed and there was a rusty screwDriver bit and some other metal flakes!

Picked up the sand from Premium Aquatidcs.. Much cheaper then BRS but not as cheap as petco/petsmart.. but at least its in stock!

Petco runs crazy deals on stuff all the time, it just never makes it to the ad or on the sticker in the store. Whenever I need misc stuff I do a search for it on their website to see if it’s on sale. The registers don’t reflect the online sale price, so you’ll have to pull it up on your phone so they can price match it in the store. I just moved my tank and used the regular caribsea arragonite sand because they had it on sale for like $4/bag on the website.

I'm looking to buy 200 lbs of sand... i found this, which is about 50% less than any other site.. is this anything different then at BRS?

That’s what I bought.
