Picked up this goni at my local petco yesterday. Been there for only a couple days, so hopefully it will be OK. Also noted, it appears to be a mariculture piece. Large colony for a pretty good price.
Can anyone ID it for me? Was listed as "blue-eyed" flowerpot coral, but I don't see any blue.
Purple with metallic green tips. Almost looks like some hints of red in there too.

I’ll be that guy... It’s not really a “rescue” if you buy it. They made their profit, and they’ll just put another in its place.

Anything that you get out of a petco tank is a rescue. At least it has a chance of survival in my tank.:D

Right, which is why I am asking for an ID. It is Goniopora for sure. Don't know which species though.

Has no one sued Petco yet?? Its darn time someone did. They mistreat animals, and they dont have the knowledge to care for them. Do they not understand they are killing their animals? At least saltwater fish/corals. Ive never heard complaints about freshwater fish and hamsters, but always corals and such. Plus, why do the sell mandarins?? Those are hard to care for, especially since the ones they have are wild caught, and only eat large amounts of pods. Petco is injust, they defile the dignity these beautiful fish and corals deserve and are owed. #petcobegone

I really think it depends on the Petco... just like it depends on someone’s lfs. You either have knowledgeable people who care about the wellbeing of these creatures, or you don’t... my Petco has a wonderful saltwater section and the head of the aquatic department takes wonderful care of the saltwater section and goes to far as to install pods that have bred out of control in their system for fish like mandarins. She’s really kind and even will pull filters apart to give people in the community healthy amounts of pods to take home for free (as where I live it’s not easy to get pods because they’re not carried in the lfs). She even tries to get the mandarins trained on frozen foods. Petco is just like any other distributor or fish store, in fact I believe they own LiveAquaria now. It’s not the store or quality of the livestock moreso the quality of the people who care for the livestock.

Very true! Unfortunately, my local petco is not great. However, I do have to say it is better than the other store here in town. That place is downright scary.

I drive 2 hours to get most of my stuff. The LFS there is fantastic and the owner is always willing to help out.

I know the feeling. Honestly though, no matter where you go or what you buy, you always should show diligence. If there’s sick fish in the tank, don’t buy sick fish. Before putting anything in a dt, quarantine for 76 days or treat prophylactically. It is up to us to be knowledgeable and attentive because in the end, it’s up to us if they do or don’t survive. And for those that say they don’t have space, quarantine tanks don’t have to be crazy setups, a simple 10 gallon in the corner works.

I even quarantine coral. I bought a 40$ light off amazon (it’s actually a really nice programmable led with crazy par), got a 10$ tank from Petco and through a HOB filter that was on sale, glass lid or even leftover egg crate from frag projects and piece of pvc for livestock and voila! Shoot, you can find tanks at thrift shops or for free on Craigslist and essentially make a sustainable tank for like 50$

Interesting question, not sure if species can be determined by visual characteristics in goniopora?

Live Aquaria does show a similar aquaculture specimen on their site.

I believe Alveopora is different from goniapora in that Alveopora has 12 “petals” and goniapora have 24 but that is really all I know about determining species

I bought a similar piece from pet I a year or so ago. It unfortunately didn’t make it but it was exactly like you posted a star as color and shape. Kinda cool to find them there. I’m in an unfortunate place where petvonos my only option most times. My lfs is 3 hours away and we have little reason to venture that way. Pet o and mail order it is for me.
