I just got home and found a great surprise on my front porch, thank you so much @Mastiffsrule!

Since we started the hyposalinity yesterday should we continue with that only and hold off on the fenbendazole for now or should I give her the bath @ngoodermuth?

I don’t feel confident suggesting the bath and hypo treatment at the same time. If it were me, I’d probably stick out the current treatment first and keep the other as a back-up plan.

I did find some posts on freshwater forums regarding using it in freshwater tanks, so it would probably be ok...but since I don’t know for sure, I don’t want to say “go ahead” and then have it end poorly.

Sounds good to me! I'm going to drop the salinity down to 1.009 in a little while, do you think I should go ahead and add the abx back in at that time or do you think she's had enough?

She's looking much better with the MB, I am planning on keeping her in it for the 10 days recommended in the link you sent me last night. It's really hard to tell if there's any red left with the blue water now

I think if she seems to be doing ok, I'd just keep her as-is for now. If breathing becomes rapid, she looks stressed, or the redness becomes much more noticeable you can add them back in at that point.

Hopefully, once the flukes are gone you will see a much more rapid recovery.

As far as using it in fresh water it is fine. It is used in the Talapia industry some. Now with a saltwater fish already stressed I’m with @ngoodermuth on this one as to it might be best to stick it out and then do the other next.

I know I don't ask often (sarcasm), but I have another question... I paid about $10 for my refractometer and I only have rodi to zero it. It's usually almost spot on when I have my water tested at my lfs with their Milwaukee. When I lowered the salinity last night it would drop. 002 for every 1.5 gallons I replaced with fresh water (I have 15 gallons of actual capacity that I measured when I set up the qt tank) It was reading 1.011 before I removed another 1.5 gallons and now I'm reading exactly 1.010 after adding the fresh water. I'm pretty sure that $10 doesn't buy lab grade equipment so I'm wondering if it's dangerous if the salinity falls below 1.009. I know I need to buy another refractometer but I'm wondering if it's safe to drop it lower or if I should leave it and hope the flukes die off until I can get another one that's better

I’m pretty sure that flukes will die at 1.011 I’ll double check that to be sure but I think you’ll be ok.

Yes, flukes are eliminated at 15ppt which works out to be just above 1.011. Two days is needed to eliminate juvenile and adult flukes and 5 days prevents any egg hatching.

That’s almost a FWD! But the flukes with pronged exposure and the diffusion of water across their membranes and the eggs membranes will have them popping like a stuffed turkey at thanksgiving!

Does anybody want seconds on Thanksgiving flukes?
