Hi all,

So I work at a research institute and we just got a bunch of Acropora acropora (Staghorn coral) in from Florida last night and they seemed stressed from the travel. We came in today to find the pH has dropped to 7.95 from 8.25 overnight, and most looked bleached. I've pretty much done a 50% water change at this point the the pH still hasn't gone up. What can I do to get the pH back?

What is the alkalinity running?

pH isn't your problem. 7.95 is still fine. The majority of pH drop is from carbon dioxide. A couple things you can do:

1. If you have a refugium (with algae), run the lights opposite to the lights in the DT. The algae "comsumes" CO2 from photosynthesis.

2. Connect skimmer air intake to a hose that gets air from outside.

3. Maintain proper alk and calc. (I would not recommend these pH boost products...they will also raise alkalinity.)

- Crack window

- Refugium light opposite lighting schedule from DT.

- Maintain ALK, CA, & MG

This video is great! check it out.

I just learned the open window thing. I thought it was a non-issue because I live in an old house. Seasons are changing so windows typically closed now. But sure enough, opened a window and pH went back to normal over 24 hours.

Also, roasting a chicken in our gas oven (2 hours or so) seems to knock a good .1 off my pH.
