once i started dosing with ion mag it dropped to 7.9 / 7.8 at night is that normal ?

Magnesium has little to no affect on water with a pH over 7.0 and if anything would raise pH, not lower it.

I'm going to take a guess.....and the first is that your location is Atlanta, Georgia. If that is correct, I know you've had very cold weather the past week or so...or even longer. If you have some combustible heating system, it has added more CO2 in the air....which ends up in your tank and lowers pH.

It is normal for ph to drop at night when lights are out. Don't worry about ph just watch your alkalinity level.
