This happens to me more often than not and sometimes I feel like I'm giving it my best guess. This is after sitting for several minutes.

They usually suggest circulating the water for a better test.

It there a reset with the problem, and how fresh are the batteries

The unit is actually fairly new. New batteries, calibrated recently. I'll check for a reset. I definitely swirled it around before letting it settle.

Do you keep the probe sitting in water when not in use?

I'd try cleaning the probe by sitting it in vinegar overnight and then rinsing and recalibrating.
