Left on Sunday the 14th around noon for week long trip. Happened to look this morning and pH was very high...

Not sure if I believe it or not. I can't see how it would get that high.
Going to have somebody drop by the house today and see if something is wrong or all is a loss.

I did not change anything when I left, so I hope that this is error, but I guess we will see.

Mine gets cloudy (more like a thin mistyness) at > 8.55, I guess some of that may be going on, lol.

Thank you Randy.

That certainly crossed my mind... but that drastic?

In 3 decades of SW fish keeping, I have never logged pH or paid all that much attention to it until, well today.

I will assume that the readings are reasonably accurate then. I am not too worried, but they are a bit on the high range for my comfort. I will have somebody go check the tank today.

The fact that it appears to be photosynthesising should bring comfort.

I mean sure, but maybe everything went belly up and I have overnight algae success... waiting for lights to ramp up to see what I can see from the two equipment room cameras. My brother will drop by later and check. See a pretty steady decline in alk too.. but KH director ran out of reagent (I mean who checks things like this before traveling....)

Same here. Currently on a vacation, and pH is 8.8 by the end of the light period (normally 8.3 max). Based on my webcam, everything looks better than usual :D

Higher alk consumption at higher pH would be my guess.

You'll get home and discover your tank looks better than ever with noticeable growth!

I am (honestly) stunned at the magnitude of the direct cause and effect of us being home or away. As I said, I have (in decades) never really paid much attention to pH trends, or for that matter to pH at all.

We got home at 4:30 PM (almost exactly) from a 7 day long trip.

It never crossed my mind that our presence, which is 2 people, 2 greyhounds (sadly we lost the third one to old age a few months ago) would have that drastic of an effect.

@Randy Holmes-Farley - thank you for so simply and quickly pointing out the obvious that so clearly did not dawn upon me.

I do want to calibrate the probe, as if it is reading high, that means I am on average running lower than I would like.

Probably the greyhounds racing around the house all day. lol

They race to the couch... and that is about it.

Our Henry (the black and white cow dog in the middle) is no longer with us and is with the rest of our pack that that have also moved on. But this is what retired greyhounds do best.
