Even my FW tanks with a peat moss substrate have a pH of over 8.4 (api high range kit) because plants have lowered the carbon dioxide. The fish will adjust. Now if you try and do a dwarf shrimp tank ph is very important. If you are doing fish you will do more harm than good when messing with ph.
