This is a new one for me. I just checked my pH and it has gone from being a steady 8.2 since the start of my tank (1.5 years) to 8.5. My alk is 9 and my Ca is 420. The weather has been nice so the windows are open, maybe this is the cause. Any reason to be concerned. I remember reading this some important relationships between Ca, Alk and pH. I think it was in one of Randy's articles.

John, what are you dosing to raise alk?

I don't think 8.5 pH is serious high, but it's not normal either.

When was the pH probe calibrated last and how old is it ? I wouldn't worry too much with 8.5 as often I would get 8.5-8.6 after 6 hours of full daylight in my acropora packed tank. Nothing to be worried about in my 2 cents .

Honestly, I have found chasing pH never helps even though I calibrate my probe every other week .

Abhishek

I feel like there is always a margin of error with any test method. Your number isn't a risk of concern in my opinion. As long as the tank looks good, coralline is purple, and corals growing, embrace the higher side of the pH scale. Most people would love to see 8.0+ ph if in fact it is that high.

I am not directly dosing alk, I just dose Kalkwasser. I think it is the fresh air. It was late in the day with tomorrow AM may be a different reading.

I am not using a probe. Just the old fashion way with an API test.

I wouldn't worry much as there's always user error as @reeferfoxx mentioned with a test kit like API. Enjoy the amazing weather you have, keep all doors and windows open and let your tank enjoy it too ! Not everyone is as lucky as you are :)

Yup, your high pH is a combination of the fresh air and Kalkwasser. It's on the high side of where most people would like it but I don't feel it is an issue yet.
