So I run a phosban reactor 550 but I was sitting watching my tank and I wondered to myself. Would it be the same thing to just put the media into media bags and place them somewhere in your sump. Or would doing this “drain” the benefits from the media quicker.

Its better to have water running through the media in a reactor than just placing it in the sump. Water will just run over it and not through it as much.

If you have a spot where your overflow enters your sump a filter sock can be used then the water from your overflow goes through the sock and in turn through the media.

A bag works in a high flow area, but as you already know a slow tumble works best. If anything it will deplete slower I would think
