Hello all, so I have a really bad green hair algae problem and showing 0 phosphates. It's a reefer 170 (43 gallons) and was wondering how much to dose? I called brightwell and they never returned my call so probably won't buy another product from them.

OR use an old vibrant... no expiration or is there? ( used it about 4 years ago)

Sssoooo GHA isn't consuming them to 0?
Without being able to test, how do you know what's high? Could just be nitrates, could be both, but I wouldn't use lanthanum chloride without a clear target number. Gfo? Maybe.

So I did test it and stated I have 0 phosphates. There is nothing on the label of the product I stats what to dose if 0. Nitrates I normally have to dose cause there's not enough via testing. Brightwell didn't return my phone call so figured ide ask the community here.

And I doubt many (any?) in the community would advocate adding something as strong as lanthanum to a tank without first knowing what the actual numbers are (which you can't know until you remove the algae...)

Perfect! Then this is advice that I'm looking for then. And as you said earlier a better cuc should hopefully help my situation then. May I ask you opinion on phosphat-e?

It's lanthanum chloride. I personally have never used it but some do. It can lower phosphates really quickly if not used carefully, which can cause other issues. There is anecdotal evidence that if not properly filtered out, the precipitant that forms can injure fish, tangs in particular.

IMO, I prefer GFO as it seems safer.

And while better cuc will help, remember my first suggestion was aggressive manual removal. Cuc will help maintain the level of algae and even start to eliminate it, but not if they are overwhelmed with it.

I’ve had to dose phosphates to drop nitrates which vanished GHA. No on vibrant. Couple of threads on how that’s just Algae Fix like pesticide and best progress with caution. NoPox been my solution

They will be overwhelmed for sure imo but I will have to keep plucking. This is even after I pulled and scrubbed

Interesting! I will retest nitrates again on Saturday

Get some urchins. You’ll be good to go!

(once the algae is gone you should return the urchins and just keep 1)

Hanna and yes I have new refills
Unfortunately, that's not the one you want.

The low range isn't low enough. The ULR phosphorus is the checker with the useful range. I've seen the LR unit read zero while the ULR read several ppb.

Now, that might not be your algae problem, but just an FYI if you want to measure phosphate.

Urchins are a good suggestion. So are the big turbo snails. Fish like lawnmower blennies don't eat hair very well.

I'm also curious if the tank is newish and started with dry rock.

I get your point regarding the phosphorus checker, but if we have a target range of 0.01-0.03 ppm phosphate (I personally shoot higher, but to each their own), wouldn’t anything under 0.01 still be too low, regardless if it’s an absolute zero or the phosphorus checker reads a few ppb? I mean .01 ppm phosphate translates to just under 4 ppb phosphorus. To me it’s overkill to go with the phosphorus tester. Doesn’t matter if you pick up anything from 1-3 ppb, it’s still too low

What the right phosphate concentration should be is debatable. If you are shooting for 0.01-0.03 ppm, the LR model can't read that and will show zero, but the ULR can.

If the question is "why do I have all this algae if my checker shows zero?", I am saying it's the wrong checker.

It's like timing a 100 yard dash with your clock on the microwave that only shows minutes.
