Phosphate dosing

Randy,
I read your article that very simply said it takes x amount of sodium nitrate in x amount of water to raise your nitrate levels a certain amount by dosing.
I am currently trying to raise my phosphates using trisodium phosphate but I am having terrible fixing the correct amount of powder to mix with to and how much I should dose.

Thanks for all you do in this forum. My tank would not be what it is without your guidance

If you are using trisodium phosphate then adding 0.1 grams to 100 liters of tank water will boost phosphate by 0.6 ppm.

If you need more help than that, please let me know!

adding 1.88g of the Trisodium Phosphate to 0.25 gal (1 liter) of water will get you stock solution. 1 ml per 26gal (100 l) of tank water will boost phosphate by 0.01 ppm.

I ordered mine from amazon. It's made by loud wolf. I use their nitrate to dose and it's great. Cheap as well

you can make a stock solution by adding 30 teaspoon in 1 gal of rodi water.
4 ml of this solution dosed in 100 gal will bring up the nitrates by 0.25ppm

for example in a 250 gal tank you will need 10 ml of solution to bring up nitrates by 0.25ppm
or 100 ml to bring up about 2.5 ppm.

More questions, is there a difference between sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate & potassium nitrate? I currently use ME Coral Nitrate and it has all 3. Would CaNO3 also increase Ca & KNO3 also increase K?

yes that is true, if you add sodium nitrate it will add sodium and nitrates to your tank, so goes for potassium nitrate and calcium nitrate.
each will add nitrate and other element. safest bet is sodium nitrate as sodium in about 10k in saltwater while K is 400 and Cal is 380ish. so chances of over dosing the later two is higher than sodium.

Ok. Well it worked as advertised. I went from 0 to 0.02, dosed last night before bed. It separates after a few hours. I just didn't know if it should be that cloudy, or use rodi and not tank water for the mix. What it looks like this minute. Thanks for the reply.

The TSP I use mixes up crystal clear, personally I’d dump that sludge and find a different brand.

Tank water? What you are seeing is most likely precipitation because part of the phosphate has found something more preferable like Calcium and Magnesium to bind to. Use RODI for creating stock solutions.

No, the solution should be clear. You need to mix it in purified fresh water, like RODI, not tank water.
