Phosphate removal

Rowaphos - GFO - tumbling in it's own reactor.

GFO - Junkie Over Here :)

Do you have to use a reactor? What other ways could be used?

I do have a reactor and currently run BRS's gfo but the problem with it is that I'm gone from home 21 days at a time and it always seems to clog up. That's why I'm asking.

To get the full benefit: GFO needs to tumble in it's own reactor. With out tumbling it turns hard and starts to bind into a single block. You control the tumble with a valve going into the reactor.

Activated Carbon should be packed tightly separate from the GFO. AC is too soft to tumble an will break down into small fines that could lead to HLLE with Tangs.

Does that make sense? :)

You can mix the go with carbon and put it in a high flow area. That's what I did for a long time .

What is HLLE?

That's a hard one for me...

I run half the recommended dose and change about every ten days.
It seems I get better GFO performance doing it that way.

21 days is a long time being gone. You takes care of feeding / top off / dosing params /etc... while your gone?

My wife takes care of everything while I'm gone but I'm passionate about it and she does it out of necessity. Well at first at least. She's grown to love it as well. But...the more and more tasks I put on her it just becomes a chore. I'm simply asking for what people are seeing the best results with, with the least effort.

So His & Hers share a 240 gallon reef? :)

GFO is generally too small for a media bag to work well. You can put in in a canister mixed with GAC, but a reactor is better.

Randy, Did you take down your personal reef? :(

Yes! Lol. Been up and running for a little over 2 years but was just recently torn down and started over.

Wow that's a beauty! Love it.

I had high po4 in my 20l nano I am using phosguard with good results in a HOB filter.

It's a macro alage tank but Ha. took over so kinda tricky. Got the HA out but keep most of the macros going.

If your having hard time with GFO in a reactor I would go with the easier media in a HoB filter or just a bag in in a high flow Area.

I think they all work. I am curious to see if one if is a favorite of reefers.
