A very high roll. The closer to zero the better. If to high corals will brown and not grow or may die

how do you keep them phosphate levels low?
will excessive amounts of phosphates aid in algae growth, such as hair algae in the display tank?

Phosphates are food for algae of all kinds...the good and the bad. If you can remove the food the algae withers and dies (creating more phosphates)...fish food, fish poo, and anything else that adds nutrients to the water ultimately adds phosphates (and nitrates).
A good skimmer helps as does running a gfo reactor. Frequent water changes are also a big help.

There are many ways to keep phosphate levels down, 30% water changes weekly will almost assuredly do that. However, there is vodka dosing, adding gfo to a reactor of some kind, backing off of your feeding schedule (ie dont feed as much), etc... Be sure and research things like vodka dosing first though, as it is easy enough to do and is very effective but can be fatal if done incorrectly.

Good luck

awesome guys, this will help me alot. I'm not ready to get into the reactors yet, but I will start doing bigger water changes more frequently.
I have a 125g display with a 40g fuge. Ive been doing 5 gallon water changes weekly with a 20g once a month.
My tank is 6' long and im running an mp40 and once mp10. Its hard to tell if i have enough flow in my tank since its so long.
Would replacing the mp10 with another mp40 be too much flow?
i have a mixed reef with softies, lps, and a few sps. Id really like to get more into some of this sps action.

I'm still getting all of my wiring and equipment the way I'd like it, so I havent put my doors on yet. I'm planning on pasting and gluing some lr together to make a structure for the empty end of my tank, where my mp40 is. This will be where most of the sps will be.
