Phosphorus spikes after going fish only

I recently removed all the live rock, corals and sand from my system (91-gal.). I replaced the same volume of sand with CaribSea Aragonite Hawaiian Black sand. I also have three 4" MarinePure blocks in the sump that have been there for a long time. I did two 40% water changes over the weekend before adding the sand.

KH, Ca, Mg are all within normal range. My Nitrates have run between 4 ppm - 8 ppm over the last few months. But my Phosphorus had a huge spike. It's been running around 50 ppb before the water change and new sand. A couple days later it's at 105 ppb (0.32 ppm phosphate).

I understand <100 ppb is acceptable for a fish only system so I'm not in dire straights. But I'm curious why it doubled after the aforementioned. Is it because there are no corals or algae to absorb the phosphorus? Will it decrease through water changes perhaps leeching out of the sand if that's the cause?
 
It’s the fish poop and no coral and algae absorbing it yes. Plus the removal of the rock and bacteria.

Wc help only a tiny amount.

Gfo or phosphate RX (lanthanum ) will help.
 
I am surprised about how little water parameters changed after such a seemingly large change to your bio-filter.

An explanation for doubling a low phosphate level might be impossible to track down with any certainty, but it certainly would be fun to consider the possible causes.

Good question on whether PO4 level will decline. If it doesn’t after a large water change, you might be closer to having a clue to why it rose.

Because Po4 binds to rock (and no3 is dissolved in water ) Po4 comes to equilibrium with the water. So a wc will lower the Po4 slightly , then more enters the water from rock to equilibrium again.
Thus Richard Ross lowered his Po4 from 3.0 to 1.5 by using a constant wc system. It takes time.
