Photography advice for critter ID?

I was wondering if experienced people have advice on the best strategy for photo taking for the purpose of critter IDs? I see many photos on here that are fuzzy, dim, and so blue it's amazing to me that anyone can ID the 'subject'.

If possible pull the critter out of the tank and put it into a clear plastic container to photograph.
