I have an interesting dilemma that I can use some advice on. The tank is 7’ long by 30” wide and 16” high about 150 gallons including the sump. The tank is in a basement and I am in the process of creating a canopy but haven’t completed it yet. Working on the how to get it to work with the ideas in my head and in reality.

I just took the secondary light fixture out because it was causing algae growth much more that I would like to deal with. In removing it, I was able to bring my photon 48 version 1 to a more centered role in the tank. The look is better in my opinion but as you can see, I have some dark spots at the ends of the tank. The light is 10” off the water and can be adjusted.

To get the dark areas covered with even minimal amount of light, how much higher should I raise the light? With that also, how much more intensity should the outputs be to compensate for the higher light? My lights run at about 60% currently and ramp on and off over a 10 hour period.

How long ago did you buy that fixture?

I had a pair of EverGrow 32" leds over my 180g tank for about 5 years. EverGrow in China makes the fixtures for Reef Breeders who sell the Photon line. BTW, IMHO EverGrow build good quality fixtures (the Photon V2+ is awesome!). I have a V2 over one tank and a V2+ over the other.

To your question, I think you will need to raise that fixture about 10" to 15" to get end to end coverage. And probably go to 100% on blues and 60% or more on whites.

You might consider 2 smaller led like Mars Aqua and put one at each end. Or get another fixture like the one you have only smaller (somebody is still selling that black box with that controller) and put it at one end and move the 48" unit to the other end.

I think I bought it about 5 years ago. Do you have a website for the EverGrow products? I want to upgrade but funds are preventing me from the joyous opportunity.

I appreciate the advice on moving the light up. I had a feeling it was going to more but that is much more than I thought.

Up until this past Friday, I had 2 different lights above the tank the one shown and another that I had lying around from another tank. Both were 48" so plenty of coverage. The one I removed was causing algae growth and isn't as easy to control the lighting system like the Photon. I will have to keep my eyes open for the used goods. Thanks for you help.

I think EverGrow sells direct through Alibaba (Chinese version of Amazon) everywhere in the world except the US and Reef Breeders covers that market for them. I don't know that they have a website of there own.

Ron, I took your advice and raised the lighting up about 15". I still have some dark areas near the end of the tank which I will have to get photos of. But what is interesting after years of waiting, my remaining two clown fish have spawned after I moved the light up.
