Does anyone in town grow their own phyto and want to sell some? I'm tired of buying it and having it shipped to my house. I will continue if I have to but if anyone is in town that makes some I would pay for some phyto. Or if you don't want to part with it I would love for someone to really give me a crash course of starting my own culture. I feel like most of the things I can order aren't the best and wouldn't mind making my own but I dont feel comfortable enough even reading about it to really start yet.

You want free phyto after yet another beat down of a sub par opponent? ....that was tough to watch for anyone outside of Tuscaloosa and environs.... congrats. Yet again, sigh....
It is no doubt expensive to order, rather than make, as basically the 'miracle drug' lol....I can attest....

Lol I definitely don't want free Phyto. Just tired of sub par phyto being shipped to my house. I want the nasty green goo I know phyto can be. Haha.

And I am sure that game was tough to watch. I played scrabble while the game was on I was so worried. I love my team but I domt particularly love watching us beat the snot out of people. Luckily I had season basketball tickets for like 20 years and was humbled by that really young. I also grew up in the losing days of Alabama football after bear Bryant before saban.

I didn't know Canadians watched college football. All my Canadian friends are hockey snobs.

As for the Phyto, it's getting steeper $$$ to order online, thinking of trying my own in future as well. It is so important to my system now....Reef Nutrition is the only one I have found that holds up.

Well I stopped using phyto for awhile and everything just didn't enjoy that. Things started going backwards in my tank. I think its important to my tank not sure exactly how and why but it is. If I could find someone in my area who sells it that would be great but I would also try my hand at making it. I dont use a whole lot bc my tank isn't huge. Idk something just has to give.

Culturing Phytoplankton Experiment

So I have been wanting to culture my own phytoplankton for awhile now. Having just made my own saltwater mixing station I have a little extra room where I can go about doing this culturing process. Being that about 16oz at a LFS cost me about $40 this could be a nice money saving project that...

Ever buy from other reefers as opposed to the "big box" brands?

Look up @Eldredge. His 8 species phyto is super dense, and super cheap. Great guy to do business with too. Ships live every tuesday.

I've used the "big box" brands in the past too, never really happy with them, and they were expensive. Found daves thread, and have been buying from him for the last year or so. I cannot say enough good about Dave's blend, it really is a miracle in a bottle.

Very easy to grow your own, but it's typically one species. At dave's price, no reason to bother with the hassle.

Just some of the times I've ordered it looked more concentrated than others. Ive also had bottles explode in shipping. You know all the terrible things that can happen have happened. I dont order extra bc that's wasteful so I just go without it when that happens. One time USPS just held the package at the office for a week and pretended like they didn't have it. But that being said I might have to give Dave's a shot sooner rather than later. His price is very reasonable for sure.

One of the main advantages to Dave's, it's 8 species, unlike most that are 2 or 3 species(the main species being Tet, iso, and nano) meaning it's all different sizes to feed everything in the tank.

My tank has 100% been better since I started dosing his as opposed to others.

Yeah I dont think those things can be avoided. I just hate it for me and the seller. I live less rural more near a lot of lower class area of town so I believe my post office is just junk. Theres two or 3 nice areas in my zip code the rest is trying to make a comeback but I get what you're saying. I will probably PM him this evening when I am off work.

Pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

I have it setup as a recurring payment on my paypal. Couldn't be easier. Dave sends me a paypal invoice, I pay it, and by saturday I have a fresh bottle of live phyto.

Thanks. I do about 1ml/g to 1.5ml/for but would like to ramp that up to like you said about 3ml-ish.

I saw this pop up and want to add that I have used a lot of different commercial phyto and 4 different home grower/sellers. @Eldredge is far the top best phyto I have seen! It's dark green. It is cheaper to buy from him then to do it yourself....culture will/could crash.

Another Eldredge advocate here. What dosage do you guys use? Trying to figure that out. In this thread i see 3ml/day and 1-1.5 ml per gallon.

I dont use his yet but I read spmewhere to start at 1ml/g and ramp up from there. You can go as high as your tank will tolerate. But the 3ml/g seems to be a sweet spot. I stopped phyto for awhile and decided to ramp it back up instead of going back full bore.

Thanks, yes im starting out slow as well but def see a difference when i dose vs. when i don’t. Also trying to understand the effects on PO4. Some say theirs go down other say theirs go up due to the F/2.
