Recently I purchased a pair of picasso clowns that were a bonded pair. I lost the smaller male to what I think was quick acclimation and high salinity (I learned a hard lesson) but the larger female is doing fine. I have the opportunity to get a juvenile platinum for a very cheap price. I am wondering since it has been less than a week since the male died would I be ok adding the juvenile platinum to the tank in hopes of them pairing? I know they are both percula but will they pair if one is a picasso and the other a platinum? My other question is, how long do I have before the female turns back from being alone? I think I understand the changing of clown sexes and have been told that if I wait more than a week or so I may have a male that can't go back to female? Is this correct?

Thanks for any help.

Once a female always a female I believe. You'd have to be more worried if you had a male that he would turn female. They would probably be fine, might be some adjustment period of course though. Just keep your eyes on them and have some kind of backup plan.

Yeah I would for sure keep an eye on them. I do have qt tank set up and would like to qt the platinum but was worried about time and figured I might need to add the new fish right in. If they don't get along or start to hurt eachother I could always catch and sell the platinum.

It should be just fine as long as the new fish is juvenile. Just as stated before, once a male changes into female, it never goes back. Make sure the platinum is unrelated to your female, that is most responsible if you plan on breeding.

I will have to check on relation as there may be a good chance they are. Many of the clowns in this area came from the same breeder. I don't have any plans on breeding but I still would like to know.

How long does it take a juvenile clown to change sex if left alone?

I did find out after talking with the lfs and the breeder these 2 are not related. I picked up the platinum this morning. Very cool fish and I hope will be a success!
