nope. cannot connect to it any longer. I can ping it but cannot open a new putty session nor even open a remote desktop session with it. it is in the closet so I cannot open a local session on it. (no monitor)

Well I think you have a unhappy camper, could be lots of things but something is not happy, give it a few more minutes then pull the plug and see if it starts back up. When it does lets do these one at a time:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If any of those spit out something wonky just post it and we will go from there...

NO worries. so oddly enough heater controlled outlet is on. and the ATO is off. I will move the heater over to an always on plug and let it run its own thermostat for tonight. I can get into it remotely tomorrow but something tells it will all need to be reinstalled tomorrow evening.

lets try to do this...
Code:
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

then

do this
Code:
sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a

if that all comes back clean, try running the upgrade commands again...

Thanks Tom. I'll run these tomorrow either remotely or when I get home in the evening after 7pm cst. For now the return and heater moved over to a redundant power supply outside of any controller.

Understand, willing to help get this cleared up...I think those commands may get us back to where we want...I'll be around tomorrow evening, just ping me when your ready to poke at it some more...

by the way I'm from North Georgia :), driven over monteagle so many times I could probably do it in my sleep, really think Tenn is a pretty state. :)

Thanks again. It will not connect today via SSH from my desk so I will have to wait until this evening to mess with it.
