What is it

Looks like a bleached mushroom or anemone of some kind. Hard to tell for sure though...

Just getting into reef aquariums and cycling tank at the moment, is it okay if it stays in there ?

if you are still cycling it should be fine. Keep an eye on it if it is a bleached Nem and it happens to die you will want to remove it. Good Luck

I've been looking up mushrooms, this doesn't resemble one

I think that it looks like a pretty upset bleached mushroom as well.

What can I do about saving it ?

Had the lights off all night, checked on the tank this morning , it was opened. As soon as I put a little light on it it slowly closed back up

Ok, I'll bite. What kind of light, how close is it to the light, how long is the light on for?

The more I look at it I reallly thing it might be a bleached mushroom give it some light and time it will probably bounce back

When the light is off, it sort of raises itself and "closes"
With lights on it lowers itself and opens
