I'm look at adding some clowns to my 81g mixed reef tank (3'x2') is it possible to keep more the 2 pink skunks together, maybe 3-5, in a tank my size? Or is it best sticking to pairs? I have a larger green bubble tip if that make any difference. Tanks mates would be, a yellow tang, tomini tang, blue throat trigger, 6 line wrasse, starry blenny and a target mandrin. All of them have been very peaceful and get along with each other very well. Let me know what you guys think! TIA.

If I were to try this, it would be with a group of 5-6 juveniles, all added at the same time. Or with 1 larger and 4-5 of the smallest ones you can find, all added at the same time.

This is the technique I'm using to try establishing a brown saddleback harem. I ordered 4 small and 1 medium direct from Sustainable Aquatics. No squabbling at all, and they seem to have settled in pretty well so far without any fighting. We'll see how things play out as they grow though, they're still pretty small. The medium is definitely the boss though, and 99% chance it will become the female.

More than two is risky, unless the tank is huge, or keeping a large harem. 54EE70AC-7D8C-4E30-8AAF-EDBFFE4D2FDF.jpeg
One may be pushed out.
Pairs is best.

Thank you! I would definitely add them all at the same time. I would like to do about 3-4 at most but maybe more is better? I would try and get the as small as possible and like you said add them all at once.

I personally wouldn't try with just 3 or 4. Too few fish to spread the aggression from the main pair. If you're going to do it, either a big group or just 2. At least in my opinion.

Skunks, saddlebacks, and nigripes seem to be the most commonly found in harems in the wild. I will say when I had all the baby saddlebacks and a batch of baby percularis in my 75 gallon temporarily, the mated clarkii pair had no issue with them. Never even gave them a second glance. All the babies were in floating acclimation boxes for a few days, and when those accidentally fell over and the babies all got in the tank, nobody bothered them. They all went to the frogspawn, and the clarkii stayed in their bubbletip about 12" away.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what I'll do yet. But maybe a pair is best for now.

I would think at least 10 minimum for that size tank all juvies, but i would worry about bioload mostly, and still aggression from them. A lot of risk involved in that type setup imo

Youre looking at a sure war. Tried it at my pet store and removed one in less than 2 minutes

at an LFS near me they usually stock a 48" 50 gallon with like 20-40 at a time, not too much fighting but they are sold pretty fast as well. Might just have to do with age and if they are from the same clutch

it is also an anemone tank so they usually have place to hide,
