Hi, I had a pink spot goby die in quarantine and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what caused it? His gills were super red after he died. But I didn’t notice any elevated breathing. The tank is cycled and he was eating well.

I also dipped him in Hydroplex upon arrival. Has anyone noticed negative affects using hydroplex? It was my first time using it but both fish I used it on eventually died, but both were also types of goby’s/dartfish.

Also, wasn’t there a “fish sensitivity to copper” list somewhere? I can’t find it but saw it before. Was wondering if goby’s/dartfish could have a sensitivity to copper. I was ramping up copper but not to full dose yet.

Hard to determine a cause in many cases with a dead fish as the red gills can be from flukes, injury, low oxygen and more. Regarding hydroplex, I am not a fan of it and here is why:
Hydroplex is ok as a bath but I would not rely on it as it is garbage in a sense of speaking. It contains potassium, coconut oil and octyldodecanol which is a solvent used for acne. I dont see it treating any conditions with these ingredients

The fish looks 'thin' and - and in general poor condition - as already said - dead fish are hard to diagnose, unless you can give a detailed history - i.e. what meds did you use in QT, Too answer your question - Copper should be ok. A chelated version - per directions would be the recommendation. All of that said - to me this fish looks like it was suffering from something 'bad' - with its thin-ness, etc. I might talk to the place you bought it to try to get a replacement?

Had you treated with anything other than the Hydroplex? It is usually best to get new fish right into a proactive quarantine protocol.
Chelated products like Coppersafe and Copper Power are generally safe for fish except flashlight fish (it kills their glowing bacteria). You just need to dose it accurately, like using the Hanna checker.
Ionic copper meds can cause a bit more of an issue with sensitive fish like centropyge angels.

I was in the middle of ramping up cupramine but wasn’t to full dose yet. I hadn’t dosed anything else yet.

Do not ramp and go right to treatment level as it can allow the disease to gain resistance making it harder to treat a given disease. Add partial doses and get to the full treatment level as soon as possible.

Do you guys recommend in a situation like this, to breakdown and sanitize the QT tank and start it over before getting any other new fish? I normally keep my QT running and cycled since I’m still in the regularly adding fish stage of my tank. But I feel weary since I don’t know the cause of death and it was 2 in a row which is new to me.
Or would it be okay to leave it running and just medicate quicker on a new addition?

Obviously using it for treatment , after use, you want to sanitize it (changing water and any media) and reset for next new arrival)
