Pipe through Botton of Tank

Hi everyone -

I am new to the hubby and looking to design my aquarium tank right from the start. I have a 28 gallon bow front non-tempered and I am custom making the stand. I have decided that I am going to use a sump in the stand. My main question is most of the information available indicates that you should drill the holes 2 inches from the waterline and run pipe through the back. That said, I am looking to drill in the Bottom. Does anyone have this? How does it work?
 
+1 on in-tank full overflow tower. You can plumb the drain a few different ways. Here is an idea:
